Snowpaw looked up at her mentor as he started speaking to her. It wasn't until he'd finished talking that she realized he was giving her praise. Snowpaw looked back up to the branch she had dropped from. Had she really fallen from there? It was all a blur of clawing and falling. "Thanks," Snowpaw said, not quite focusing on Stoneheart's words. The ground was so far beneath her, and she shuddered at the thought of falling again.
Stoneheart was still going on, now about hunting in the trees. "Why would I want to do that?" Snowpaw asked. "I almost fell to the ground." A look of utter defeat came over her. She just wanted to climb back down and go back to camp. She was no good at tree climbing, so what was the point? Her earlier tiredness crashed over her in another wave, as it finally sunk in she was safe again. "Can we just go?"

I think you're suffering from a lack of vitamin me.
Stoneheart's eyes narrowed and in a firm voice continued, "I do not want an apprentice that gives up, do you understand?" For a moment, the tom was angry, before he saw something in Snowpaw's eyes. Defeat. A feeling of guilt pierced his heart. He knew he wasn't handling this well, so now he had to try again. "Listen to me, Snowpaw. Would you rather go back and take care of the elder's ticks? You were doing very well at tree climbing, and I was impressed. Your form was great for a beginner, and your confidence did not diminish until you got stuck. We need to change that, Snowpaw. Now," His voice got a little harder as he asked, "Which do you want to do. Feel confidence as you continue to climb up this challenge, or go back to the camp you've spent countless days in and take care of the elder's?" This cat was related to Icefur. He wasn't about to let his old friend down.
Snowpaw's claws dug deeper into the bark on the branch. "I do not want an apprentice that gives up..." She had to look away from Stoneheart's angry gaze, so she looked down to the ground. The idea of running away occurred to her. But the ground was too far down for her to jump, especially after the ordeal that put her in this mess. She looked past her mentor. She'd never tested whether she could outrun him, but maybe if she had a good enough lead... It would have to wait for another time; even if she could get around him, she'd never be able to climb down the tree before he could head her off. She wished she could run away. She'd disappear into the forest and she wouldn't have to deal with disappointing Stoneheart or Stormpelt ignoring her or Icefur being dead. The pressure of ThunderClan would evaporate as she ran deeper into the woods, melding into the trees. She wouldn't have to be Snowpaw, lonely ThunderClan apprentice, anymore.
Stoneheart's tone changed, which sent Snowpaw's attention back to reality. His praise didn't really sink in through the awful feelings though. Snowpaw scowled at Stoneheart's question. Of course she didn't want to go back to camp and tend to the elders. But she didn't want to keep climbing this stupid tree either. "When you say it like that, you're not really giving me a choice, are you?" Snowpaw asked. She shook her pelt, and relaxed her grip on the tree bark. "Okay, what do you want me to do next?" She'd have to go through the motions for now, but she wasn't going to like it.

Stoneheart's gentle tone returned. "Just trust me when I say it will help to continue trying, even if you fail at first." The large tom bounded up a few more branches that reached the middle of the three. "Let's see if you can make it up to here, shall we?" He cocked his head curiously to see how the white she-cat would do. His features were set back to his normal, cold expression. He had high expectations now, and did not want to see her fail.
Snowpaw's gaze followed Stoneheart up the branches. Dread filled the pit of her stomach, but there wasn't anything she could do. Running away wouldn't work and Stoneheart was going to keep telling her to climb the tree until she did it. She half-heartedly made her way back to the trunk of the tree, feeling like she had to drag her paws to move forward at all. She hesitated for several seconds before digging her claws into the bark. Very slowly, she started to move up, making sure she always knew where her paws were. She wasn't going to slip on air again.
It felt like it took her moons, but she finally made it up to the branch with Stoneheart. She looked at him, wondering if he would approve. Hopefully enough to let her end training soon.
