Personality: Viperstrike is self-assured and confident. He believes he is a truly important cat and carries himself as such. In his heart of hearts, he believes that StarClan blesses his actions and looks at him in favor for promoting righteousness within RiverClan. He can rub cats the wrong way with his sanctimonious attitude, especially cats with less rigid or traditional beliefs regarding the warrior code and StarClan. Though, he can be charismatic, appealing to notions of loyalty and strength (physical or moral). He extols the virtues of the warrior code and StarClan, but has occasionally twisted those virtues to justify his actions.
Viperstrike is prejudiced. He holds kittypets in the lowest regard, believing their soft lives to be immoral and damaging. He thinks slightly higher of loners and rogues, but not by much. He sees them as selfish and uncivilized. He doesn't trust half-Clan cats or any cat that may have a reason to stray from Clan loyalty. This shows in his treatment of clan mates with heritage that isn't entirely RiverClan. His judgment of them is harsher and he subtly tries to undermine them. He truly believes RiverClan would be better off without them, and that they should be grateful for the place they do have. No act of loyalty will ever be enough for him, though he certainly expects any half-Clan cat to go through the Dark Forest and back to prove themselves. His beliefs are inherently damaging to the cats around him, but he believes he's acting not only for the good of RiverClan, but the good of StarClan.
Viperstrike values strength in a warrior. He's constantly working to maintaining his skills and physical abilities. Whenever he trains an apprentice, he focuses on making them a formidable warrior that could beat any foe. He doesn't have much patience for gentleness and often advocates for more aggressive methods of problem-solving and conflict resolution. A significant amount of his self-worth comes from how much stronger he can be than other cats.
Viperstrike always has to be right. His convictions are strong, and it may take a true act of StarClan to get him to back down. Viperstrike rarely admits he was wrong, and apologizes for his actions even less frequently. His conviction that the stars are in agreement with him does little to temper his ego or give him a sense of humility. Arguing with Viperstrike is like arguing with a tree; the outcome is unlikely to differ no matter how reasonable or well thought out a cat's points are.
Viperstrike is manipulative in his relationships. He tries to control other cats, because he believes he knows what's best for them. He is incapable of understanding the way his actions hurt others. He's never wrong; it's always the other cat.
History:
Kithood
Viperstrike was born the kit of Leopardrain and Stormingsky, with two littermates, Rosekit and Pouncekit. Leopardrain was a noble warrior, dedicated to raising her kits in the ways of StarClan and the warrior code. Stormingsky was one of the fiercest cats in RiverClan, named deputy for his skill and strength as a warrior. He gave his son the name Viperkit because he wanted Viperkit to be fierce and feared by the enemies of RiverClan.
Leopardrain taught Viperkit lessons about the power and benevolence of StarClan, and he took them to heart. He also internalized the importance of the warrior code. He idolized his father, who taught him it was a virtue to be strong for the sake of RiverClan. He liked to play games with his sisters, but often felt frustrated with Rosekit's gentle nature and Pouncekit's seeming indifference to matters of StarClan and the warrior code. He felt like they were missing out on essential truths of being a warrior.
Apprenticeship
Viperstrike's mentor was Lionfang, a warrior known for both his courage and his impulsiveness. Lionfang reinforced Stormingsky's lessons about the importance of strength. Lionfang also passed down a deep sense of mistrust of any cat that wasn't pure RiverClan. RiverClan cats in general in this era preferred to keep to themselves and defend their territory tooth and nail, so Lionfang's worldview was reinforced by the rest of RiverClan. Lionfang's prejudice grew when the cat he was in love with became mates with a WindClan tom. Viperstrike never knew of this, only that Lionfang warned him of the dangers of getting involved with cats outside of RiverClan. At the time, half-Clan cats and outsiders were generally mistrusted within RiverClan, and this was not lost on Viperpaw, as he was determined to become a good, powerful warrior.
Viperpaw had his first encounter with tragedy when his sister Rosepaw passed away from sickness. He found great comfort in the idea of StarClan and Rosepaw watching over him. Pouncepaw felt the opposite, getting angry at any cat who tried to tell her that Rosepaw was happy in StarClan. Both Stormingsky and Leopardrain were distraught over their daughter's lack of faith, and Viperpaw just couldn't understand why she didn't seem to believe in StarClan the way he did.
Viperpaw continued to work hard as an apprentice. His training with Lionfang was put to the test when a battle with WindClan broke out. Viperpaw fought hard for his clan. He noticed Lionfang losing to a WindClan cat and stepped in to help his mentor. Lionfang and the WindClan tom had been fighting viciously, and Viperpaw responded in kind. He and Lionfang ganged up on the tom, turning the fight in their favor. They attacked the tom until he was too weak to defend himself, covered in wounds. Viperpaw continued to fight for RiverClan. Eventually, the battle ended and RiverClan emerged victorious.
It was decided that Viperpaw (and Pouncepaw) would be made warriors for their skill in battle. Viperpaw was given the name Viperstrike, to honor his skill and dedication to defending RiverClan. Before Pouncepaw could be given her name, she shocked RiverClan by interrupting her warrior ceremony. She condemned RiverClan for their brutality against WindClan. She specifically cited Viperstrike and Lionfang's attack against the WindClan tom (among other things), claiming they had left him for dead. She denounced the Clans as needlessly violent, following a flawed code and putting faith in unreliable ancestors. She refused her warrior name, stating she would only be known as Pounce. She left RiverClan for good. From that day forward, Viperstrike considered Rosepaw to be his only sister. He never did seek to find out if the tom he and Lionfang attacked survived the battle.
Warrior
Viperstrike was a dutiful young warrior. He exceeded the expectation his clan mates set for him, whether in catching prey, defending the borders, or completing warrior missions. He was given his first apprentice before four seasons had passed, and quickly earned the respect of the senior warriors. His father passed on shortly after he was given that apprentice.
As a young warrior, Viperstrike sought a mate. Maplestripe was a pretty, young warrior, with a soft voice and a forgiving heart. Viperstrike took a liking toward her. Maplestripe felt flatted by his attention, especially as her friends encouraged her, telling her what a strong warrior he was. Maplestripe knew she'd always wanted a cat dedicated to the warrior code and StarClan for a mate. However, something about the way he spoke about his ideals always bothered her, though she could never put her paw on why. However he was attractive to her, and the two cats became mates and had several litters of kits.
Viperstrike had taken the teachings of his youth to heart. He was quick to condemn situations that may lead to divided loyalties. He tried to teach both his apprentices and his kits that it was important to put RiverClan before the desires of one's heart. He also tried to influence his clan mates to take a strong stance against half-Clan romances and outsiders. Viperstrike was among the cats that disapproved of Pebbleeyes and made life hard on Cinderpaw. He never outright said that half-Clan cats were less worthy, but that idea was always implied in his words, even if Viperstrike himself didn't recognize it. In his mind, he was only doing what was necessary to ensure the well being of RiverClan and the favor of StarClan. For instance, there were suspicions that a RiverClan queen, Minnowheart, had taken a ShadowClan mate. Viperstrike would try to subtly undermine her, with little comments and slights. Some cats were put off by Viperstrike for this, but others believed him and followed his actions.
His ideals took a turn for the worse when RiverClan had a battle with an angry group of rogues. Viperstrike was near the edge of the battle, along with Minnowheart. Minnowheart was being double-teamed by two vicious rogues. Separated from the other RiverClan cats, she called to Viperstrike for help, but he ignored her and continued to battle with one of the rogues. Minnowheart couldn't win the fight on her own, and perished at the claws of the rogues. Viperstrike understood this to be the will of StarClan.
Viperstrike was pleased when Maplestripe had another litter of kits. She insisted on naming the whole litter for once, bringing Dovekit and Lionkit into the world. As the kits grew into apprentices, Viperstrike realized that Dovepaw was a soft and sensitive tom. He tried do what he could to toughen his son up and make him into a great warrior, but Dovepaw never seemed to listen. Lionpaw followed more in his pawsteps; the she-cat grew into a skilled warrior.
Currently, Viperstrike is trying to do his best to keep RiverClan on a righteous path. He wants to train his apprentice, Magpiepaw, into a loyal warrior. He also tries to encourage Dovespirit to become a great warrior, though he fears the tom is a lost cause. He is suspicious of Featherpaw, and outright scornful of WindClan, taking in so many outsiders. The pressures against RiverClan seem great to Viperstrike, but he has confidence that the will of StarClan will come to fruition.
