Snowpaw was crouching near rose bushes. A squirrel was nibbling on an acorn a few tail-lengths away. She started to move toward it, gliding her paws across the the forest floor. She was almost near enough to pounce, but as she moved closer her movements became less careful. The noise alerted the squirrel, and it began to take off toward a tree. "I'm not letting you get away!" Fully abandoning the careful hunter's crouch, Snowpaw put all her energy into her chase. She started to close in on her prey, when she felt a sharp pain in her paw. It left her stunned, slowing her down and giving the squirrel enough of a lead to disappear up a tree.
"Fox dung!" Snowpaw shouted into the forest. She felt like someone should be chiding her for using a vulgar expression, but there wasn't anyone else around. She looked down at her paw and saw a thorn stuck in her pad. She wanted to scream again; how could something so dumb have kept her from catching prey? Now she had to bother with getting a medicine cat to take care of it. She'd wanted to hunt until it was dark out, maybe even until it was past dark. Snowpaw had taken to staying out till moon-high lately, wandering across ThunderClan territory, hunting and climbing trees. Sometimes she was even tempted to go farther; anything to get her away from camp. She didn't want to think about what happened to Stoneheart and to Hemlockstar, and certainly not what happened to Icefur.
She limped back to camp, trying to avoid putting weight on her paw. As she moved approached the entrance, she scanned the camp, looking for anyone that might say something about her absence. She was relieved that Stormstar was nowhere to be seen. He seemed to keep to his den a lot, which was fine by Snowpaw. She approached the medicine den and sighed. She really didn't want to talk to anyone, but she didn't have much of a choice. She entered the den, and saw Softpaw and Quillkit. Not sparing a moment for pleasantries, Snowpaw was quick to make her request. "I got a thorn stuck in my paw. Can you get it out?"
