Time for Trouble

This was the moment the young apprentice had been waiting for; He was now known as 'Hazepaw', not the unbecoming 'Hazekit' of his past. Hearing the sounds that Shackledstar made conjured images of blurry clouds swirling around his paws, malleable and fluid as he learned the ins and outs of warriorhood. Now, as he followed his new mentor out of the camp for the first time, he couldn't help but imagine those clouds trailing behind him, unable to match his excited pace.

His mentor was none other than Pigeonstep, a young warrior who was new to the reigns herself. Her voice, as far as he had seen, held the same soft tone of the same cooing birds, but her name had unfortunately cemented itself as an image of the wobbly gait the awkward birds possessed, strutting with inherent caution and fluttering away at the slightest alarm. Pigeonstep was much braver than a pigeon, he hoped.

His attentions were drawn towards the biggest thing he had ever seen lying on the ground -- a fallen pine tree, propped up across another smaller tree that leaned under the weight. The small Hazepaw quickly clambered onto a fallen log as he bounded further ahead of his mentor into the vast territory of ShadowClan, eager to get his day started. His thin, whip-like tail precariously lashed behind him for balance as his claws grappled the rotting wood, but he had victoriously conquered the obstacle. He climbed up a little further, anchored himself between a dead limb and the trunk, and looked out towards Pigeonstep with a proudly puffed out chest.

PIGEONSTEP

Pigeonstep was practically vibrating with nervous excitement as she slid out of the camp entrance, gesturing for her first apprentice, Hazepaw, to follow her.

When Hazepaw had been Hazekit she hadn’t really payed much attention to him (or to any of the clan’s kits for that matter). Yet she knew he was similar to his half-sister, Secretsong, in the sense that both were mute and seemed to communicate in a language of their own. But Pigeonstep was not naïve enough to believe he shared Secretsong’s serene disposition; she had overheard the queens discussing what a handful Hazepaw was and she knew she would have to keep an eye on him.

Unbidden, her thoughts strayed back to the apprentice ceremony. She’d tried not to look at Slatefur when she was unexpectedly made a mentor, but she was pretty sure he was confused and angry at Shackledstar’s choice. To be honest, she was a bit confused as well. She had only been made a warrior a moon or so ago, and if she had to say who was the most responsible out of Slatefur and herself she would always pick her brother... To put it simply, Slatefur had obviously been the better choice.

She shook her head to clear her mind as she watched Hazepaw clamber onto a fallen pine. She would worry about her brother later.

Pigeonstep's whiskers twitched in amusement at Hazepaw's proud expression. “Heh, maybe you should be the one named after a bird – flying up the tree like that,” she teased. She nimbly sprang up onto the bark beside him and settled herself into a crouching position, using the slight vantage point to look at the area around them.

She decided she would have to mainly use yes-or-no questions; this way Hazepaw could merely nod or shake his head in response. She flashed him a grin. “Right, I was thinking that we could explore the territory and have a go at some hunting on the way. We'll go down to the lake first and you can show me your hunting crouch on the shore. Does that sound good to you?”

Hazepaw's ears flickered forward as he heard his mentor's quip about him being a bird and he couldn't help but blink happily. He didn't see himself as much of a bird as he did a quiet, foggy and vague cloud, but he presumed that -- since both of them sat in trees and sored through the sky -- the concepts fit together quite well. He flickered his whiskers and opened his mouth a little and let out the few mewling chirps he could manage. They didn't hold any meaning nor did they sound as much like a bird as the young apprentice wanted, but he hoped his message got across.

As Pigeonstep bounded up on the log after him, the gray tabby couldn't help but realize how much effort he had put into it in comparison to her nimble and light bounce. While the dilute calico wasn't the biggest cat in the clan by any means, she was still quite a deal larger than he was; she was far more skilled too. Hazepaw spent the next few moments wondering if he'd ever get any bigger and if he could possibly keep up with what she had in store.

It was slightly uncharacteristic of the tom to be this nervous. Generally, Hazepaw was eager to try new things and put himself out there, but with the concept of impending evaluations and tests he couldn't help but feel a little apprehensive. He had never been assessed for anything before.

An affirmative nod of the tom's head was all that he could manage in response to Pigeonstep's itinerary but he did remain eager and motivated to continue on. He lept from his spot on the decaying tree, paws now somewhat sticky from the old sap that had peeled its way out from under the bark, and landed somewhat ungracefully on the ground, his front legs folding and sending him careening into the dust. Hazepaw, still filled with his kit-like resilience to injury, simply sneezed through the dirt cloud and picked himself up. He waited to be joined by Pigeonstep on the forest floor with his eyes narrowed sheepishly, expecting a bit of laughter to follow his clumsy show.

PIGEONSTEP

Pigeonstep’s tail curled, satisfied, as Hazepaw nodded at her proposition. Being a mentor isn’t so hard, she thought to herself, I don’t know why some cats make such a big fuss about it. She watched with a grin as the tom leapt down from their perch and landed somewhat clumsily, reminding her of her own first outing as an apprentice. Her whiskers twitched in amusement as she hoped that, unlike her, Hazepaw would avoid walking straight into another clan’s territory.

Seeing that the grey tabby was unhurt (although perhaps a tad embarrassed) Pigeonstep dropped down to him and immediately began padding south towards the lake. “I hope you didn’t use all your energy climbing up there, because now I’m going to race you to the lake!” Before she had even finished speaking Pigeonstep had sprung forward, giggling as she did so.

She slowed her pace as it occurred to her that the race was hardly fair (he had shorter legs, after all) and it was probably quite irresponsible to leave Hazepaw’s side – especially as he didn’t know his way around the territory yet.

Time for Trouble

Hazepaw gave a couple licks to his chest, flattening the thin fur that had raised itself as he collided with the ground. He eagerly scrambled after Pigeonstep as she began to lead him through the pine ridden territory. He kept his ears perked carefully, still apprehensive about the new sights and smells that were currently bombarding his senses. However, his ears, accompanied by his raised tail, were forward as an indication of his excitement.

He was still bubbling over the brim in anticipation of getting a sight of the so-called 'lake'. He had only heard of it and understood that it was a very large puddle, of sorts, but he was sure that the image he had created did not do it justice. Pigeonstep's comment about his energy made him roll his eyes; what apprentice gets tired on their first day?

But he was off-put by something: a race? What was a race? That was a word that Hazepaw hadn't been able to connect to the images that flushed his brain and he cocked his head to the side in a bit of confusion. He tried to reach his paw out to touch the she-cat's tail and grab her attention but his mentor had unexpectedly sprung off into the woods, bounding in between the thickets of pine trees that laid out to the south.

He charged after her, his heart fluttering a little as he did his best to figure out what she meant -- her actions somewhat reminded him of the games he used to play with the nursery kits -- they would see how quickly that they could get to the other side of the camp. That's what this was; a chase. However, by the time he had been able to figure out what she meant, the much faster warrior had disappeared into the shaded conifers and undergrowth, leaving him to sprint past the unfamiliar sights and sounds of the wilds alone.

An unnatural feeling settled into Hazepaw's gut as he slowed to a walking pace, his yellow eyes nervously wide and moving rapidly around the ShadowClan territory. His head swiveled behind him, seeing if he could spot the camp in the distance; his head swiveled forward, attempting to find Pigeonstep again. The uncomfortable rock that weighed him down, he realized, was the sheer gravity of his isolation; Hazepaw quite literally had no way to call out for help.

PIGEONSTEP

Looming conifers passed in a dark green blur as Pigeonstep dashed through the familiar forest, her paws barely making a sound on the pine needles that covered the floor. She wasn’t moving at her highest speed anymore, and yet… Her ears flicked backwards, straining to pick up sounds of Hazepaw chasing after her, but she could hear nothing to indicate she was being followed.

A frown marred her features. Has he fallen behind? she wondered as she skidded to a halt. She dropped herself into a seating position and fixed her green stare on the way she’d came. It seemed she would have to wait for him to catch up.

But he didn’t.

She waited for a few more moments, her tail starting to twitch as worry set in.

“Hazepaw?” Pigeonstep called.

Only silence answered her.

Her fur began to raise as the forest remained mockingly quiet - what if something had happened to the little tabby? She stood, her tail-twitches growing more frequent. She should have listened when the dawn patrol had returned to camp that morning - what if they had reported scenting a fox or something and she hadn’t been paying attention? This was Hazepaw’s first time out of camp for StarClan's sake! He couldn’t fight a predator that size! She swallowed. “Hazepaw!” her shout echoed through the trees and it dawned on her that if Hazepaw was badly hurt he wouldn’t be able to come to her.

He couldn’t even call for help.

Slowly she began retracing her steps, calling out to her young apprentice every few tail-lengths in the hopes he would hear her and come bounding out into the open. If it came to it, she would try to track his scent from the fallen tree where she had started the race. Failing that, she would run back to camp and beg Shackledstar to send out search patrols. A pit settled heavily in her stomach. What if Hazepaw was hurt? What would she say to Hazepaw’s half-siblings, Secretsong and Wolfstrike? What would she tell Hazepaw’s mother?

“HAZEPAW!” Pigeonstep called once more, desperately. Slatefur was right, you’re too reckless to be a mentor, her mind snarled at her. If something happens to Hazepaw, it will be all your fault. His blood will be on your paws.

Why had Pigeonstep left him like this? Hazepaw scowled with a touch of disappointment towards himself; had he been better at being an apprentice, maybe he could have kept up with her; maybe if he could talk like every other cat in ShadowClan, he wouldn't even be in this situation. He batted a pinecone that laid at his paws in frustration and sent it flying across the forest floor.

The sound of the cone scattering across dead and fallen needles sent the fur along his spine upright, reminding him of the horrors that his mother used to tell him in the nursery. He didn't know what 'foxes' and 'badgers' were, but his mother often accompanied her stories about them with large and cacophonous sounds across the nursery floor so she could relate to him. Her fur even stood up a little when she talked about the beasts, showing Hazepaw that they were something to be feared.

Hazepaw shook himself, trying to cast off the images of threats to the side; it had been his own actions that caused the sounds, surely not a gigantic creature that could eat him. And so the young apprentice padded along, doing his best to keep aware of his surroundings. As the tom looked around him, his paws stumbled over a hole in between the roots of a pine tree that he hadn't seen, lurching him forward in an attempt to catch himself.

Hazepaw turned with a sheepish expression to look at the cause of his stumble, only to be met by furious chattering and hisses. A long, unknown creature snaked its way out of the burrow, covered in cream and brown fur but smaller and shorter to the ground than the apprentice. Its tail, a fourth of the length its body, was fluffed in agitation and it's small teeth were bared. It let out a series of aggressive hisses towards the young cat and Hazepaw raised a paw in front of him in self-defense. He had stumbled across the den of a polecat, even it that was unbeknownst to him.

It reminded Hazepaw of some sort of amalgamation between a mouse and a cat -- it was an unholy looking thing to him -- and he bared his own teeth to it, letting out the few sounds he could make -- brief chittering noises that came from the back of his throat. The abomination seemed unphased by this display and danced towards him with fluffed up fur and glinting beady eyes. Hazepaw did the only thing he knew how; he threw out his paw with his claws out and whacked it.

The snake-like thing was set off balance for a moment before it regained its footing; since then, Hazepaw had drawn his paw back towards him and waited for the polecat to move again. He didn't expect the thing to leap at him and he managed to step back before it could meet his face. It continued to pursue him across the forest floor and Hazepaw took more swipes at it as he back peddled.

A swift bite latched to his paw pad and sent him reeling, stopping his backward movement. Jerking his paw back towards him, the tom dragged the long creature with. He whined a bit as he shook his foot to free himself, but the creature had sunk it's gleaming white teeth deep.

PIGEONSTEP
Pigeonstep froze, her ears pricked. Very, very faintly she could hear movement – a scuffling sound and some muted whines. It could have simply been prey, but the she-cat was not about to ignore any possible sign of Hazepaw while he was missing, so she darted in the direction of the noises without hesitation. Pigeonstep gasped. Hazepaw! Ahead of her she could see the young tom, trying to fight off a polecat that had latched itself to his forepaw. Though polecats were more of a nuisance than a threat, they could still inflict wounds that could become infected and lead to the death of a cat if not treated properly.

Without slowing down and with a screech like a angry owl she hurled herself at the vile creature, her sudden eruption from the undergrowth surprising it enough that it relinquished its grip on Hazepaw's forepaw.

It wasn't dazed for long. As soon as she dug her claws into its side it turned its head to sink its teeth into her leg. She sprung away from it with a hiss, circling around so she was facing it with Hazepaw and so its apparent den was behind it. "We've got to drive it back to its den!" she growled to the young tom. If there was another warrior with them she would have suggested driving it from the territory completely or even killing it, but with only Hazepaw (an apprentice on his first outing who hadn't even begun battle training yet) she didn't trust herself enough to keep him safe while also ensuring the polecat was gone for good. For now, she only wished to keep the vermin in one spot where she could bring another adult cat later to deal with it properly.

Her pelt was fluffed out to twice its usual size. The polecat seemed to be growing cautious now that there were two cats, but it still refused to back down. It lunged at the smaller of the two felines yet Pigeonstep jumped in the way. It lashed out at Pigeonstep's chest, its claws catching on her fur and yanking out a tuft of it. She hissed in pain and retaliated with a sharp nip to its snout.

As the polecat continued to hiss through it's closed teeth, Hazepaw lashed his paw back and forth. He was desperate to release the thing but ended up only sending his own blood to splatter on the fallen pine needles that littered the ground. He let out another whine, not used to having the pain that radiated from his new injury; while it was a new experience, the gray tabby knew he wanted it gone.

Just as he was about to take a brazen nip at the polecat, the loud and furious screech of Pigeonstep caused Hazepaw to stop midway. The dilute calico had reappeared, hissing and spitting; she quickly knocked the creature's hold on Hazepaw's pad off and sent it tumbling across the forest floor. He winced at the pain of its needle-like teeth tearing through his skin as it was dragged away. However, he was happy to be free from its grasp and made quick work to lick his wound.

The little tom felt a small flush of heat wash across his body as he experienced a touch of shame for having to be rescued in such a way. Had she been testing him? Hazepaw scowled at her for a moment as he licked the blood from his paw, trying to assess the game she was playing at; for all he knew, she could have been watching him from the shadows. He bobbed his head curiously as his mentor wrestled with the long-bodied creature, trying to at least learn from his failure.

All of his suspicions about this 'test' were dashed when he saw Pigeonstep also take a nasty bite from the polecat. Hazepaw suddenly understood; this was real and it was dangerous. He never pictured the dangers his mother told him about to be so... very small and violent.

At Pigeonstep's command, he perked up; favoring his bitten paw, the apprentice limped forward to further corner this creature towards the den from which it came, feeling bolder with his mentor there. His yellow eyes darted to her for a moment, amazed and curious about how she had expanded her gray and cream fur to make her look twice her normal size -- she was a small cat, even! Hazepaw did his best to emulate her body language but found that his own gray fur had long since fluffed up in fear. He was just small in general.

Despite this, he made his own sounds at the creature; they weren't hisses or even growls, but chatters that he attempted to make intimidating. The polecat must have taken notice of his much weaker display and barreled towards him again. Hazepaw felt his ears lie back and he poised himself to defend against another attack. Pigeonstep had different plans, it seemed, and she quickly stepped in front of her apprentice. She howled as it dug its claws into her chest.

He frowned and made a bold decision. Hazepaw rounded around Pigeonstep and locked his eyes on the back of the creature's neck, which seemed to be bristling with just as much fury as the two cats combined. If he could just... latch on, he could carry it like prey, right? Swiftly, the tom plunged his head forward and locked his teeth into the scruff of its neck. He tugged back, bracing his good paw on Pigeonstep's chest and stumbled as the polecat's claws at last released from her fur. The polecat was nearly as long as he was and he was quickly met by its vicious thrashing for freedom.

With wide yellow eyes, the small apprentice struggled to hold onto the wiggling snake-like creature. Considering he had seen countless warriors carry prey into the camp by the neck like this, Hazepaw couldn't conceal his surprise at the lively behavior it exhibited; his gaze was filled with desperation as he stumbled back and forth just to keep his paws under him and a fast grip on the creature's scruff, unsure of what to do next.

Pigeonstep winced when the polecat was ripped from her chest. For a moment she stood still, dumbfounded, as she watched Hazepaw hold the wriggling thing by the scruff of its neck as if it were some sort of bad-tempered kit. She blinked twice. Yep, she was definitely seeing clearly; the polecat hadn't somehow impaired her vision. Hazepaw teetered as the creature thrashed, his eyes distressed.

Snapping out of her mystified daze, Pigeonstep hurried towards her apprentice. The polecat lashed out its tiny paws at her when she got close, so she stopped, keeping just out of reach. "Hazepaw! You need to kill it- bite it, uh-" she wasn't sure how to explain to the young tom. He was six moons old! How could he not know prey needed to be killed? "Break its neck - um, flatten its body beneath your paw and then bite-" She stopped, her ears burning in shame at the feeling of being incredibly stupid for not being able to give efficient instructions. Why in Starclan's name am I a mentor?!

Hazepaw's eyes were alight with a mixture of terror and uncertainty as he did his best to restrain the seething creature. Pigeonstep moved closer to him but was repelled by the polecat's virulent hisses and swipes; the young apprentice felt stones settle into his gut as he realized that he would be the one to handle the creature. The young warrior began to shout instructions to him -- break its neck, pin it down. She seemed unsure, however, and Hazepaw's ears flattened. Did this sort of thing always happen?

He shook his head from side to side, clamping his jaws harder at Pigeonstep's command and praying to StarClan that his enemy would go limp; there was no resounding snap that resembled what she had said about 'breaking'. Hazepaw found himself frowning through the creature's fur as it hissed at the tiny teeth buried deep in its scruff. Why was nothing working? He shifted his weight to his back paws and dug his hindclaws into the dirt for traction doing his best to catch the polecat under his forepaws and get a better grip.

Apparently, the polecat had found footing on the cold ground as well and bucked upwards; the action jerked Hazepaw's neck and caused him to gasp in a slight twinge of pain. As he did this, the irate creature was freed and sounded off multiple screeches as the pressure around its scruff disappeared. It flopped awkwardly on the ground and twisted grotesquely in an attempt to get back on its paws, but indeed managed. Hazepaw glanced to Pigeonstep in alarm; he missed his chance to kill it! What was he supposed to do now?

No worries! Polecats are bigger than normal prey so Pigeonstep's reaction is still good! But yeah, they're really just a threat to poor lil' Haze. xD
