Hurry, hurry (Secretsong, Pigeonstep)

Stuttered screeches and wails split the air as if they were clawing their way from their victims throat when Shackledstar finally shook himself of his initial shock. Without much thought of the possible danger ahead, the large warrior bunched his muscles again and tore through the woods to where he started to make out the mingled scents of blood and dogs. Alarm rang through the back of his head as he realized how close these powerful foes were to ShadowClan's camp, but he quickly pushed it from his mind and regained focus on his personal task at paw to find Duckburr.

Shackledstar skidded to a stop, flinching as the cry came again, but louder. He could hear the ragged breath of canines, and the thud of their paws as he crept forward. Thick, red liquid was splattered across the snow, steam rolling up from where it laid reminding him of the cold air though he could no longer feel it. He paused again, ears swerving as he observed where to hide so that he could access the situation. Without a sound, the gray tom leapt towards the tree closest to him and quickly scurried up to the low hanging branches until he was high enough to spot the mutts. Their black and brown coats were evident against the bland background, and he felt his stomach twist as he saw what they were flinging in between them. Duckburr let out a caterwaul as he was thrown from one hound to the other, blood dripping from many puncture wounds on his coat. Shackledstar shivered, realizing that Secretsong and Pigeonstep were about to be exposed to the same scene. What could he do that wouldn't put his warriors in too much danger? He would not lose another young warrior because of him. Not after Fleetfoot.

Shackledstar released a hiss of frustration when he saw the flash of silver dive from the bushes below directly into the dogs path. Secretsong, the fool, was putting herself in immediate danger! Beside him, he felt Pigeonstep bunch her muscles to join her, but before the young warrior could do anything, the gray tom lashed his tail across her chest. Amber eyes cold and calculating, he turned to the calico she-cat, and with clenched jaws, he growled, "Go back to camp, and get help. NOW. Get someone to fetch Lilydawn!" The thought of the young medicine cat made his eyes harden as he recalled his brother, and he felt anger and panic bubbling in his chest. Anger because he had hesitated and allowed one of his warriors with ONE life to take initiative. Panic because Duckburr and Secretsong were more than likely on their way to join StarClan if he didn't do something. His eyes returned to the scene before him, seeing the snowy field with both dogs perking their ears towards the she-cat now. Duckburr laid unconscious and drenched in blood at their huge paws.

With a screech of fury, Shackledstar bunched his muscles, and pushed off from the branch, hard, so that he was floating for a second above one of the dogs. The large tom fell between the bigger of the twos shoulder blades before they could fully react to Secretsong's presence. He dug in with his claws and gave the mutt a couple of bites on the neck, feeling the canine buck beneath him. Before the other dog could grab him from his companions back, the shadowclan leader pushed himself off and fell ungracefully to the ground. He felt hot breath on him, and before he would be caught by the same fate as his deputy, Shackledstar scurried to his paws, and bounded across the clearing into the cover of scattered undergrowth. He felt jaws clamp onto the tip of his tail, but with just a hiss of pain and loss fur, he was able to tug himself free. Despite the ground being slippery, he kept his footing with the help of the fur between his toes as he tore off away from the direction of ShadowClan camp, acutely aware of one of the dogs following him.

P I G E O N S T E P

Without warning Secretsong burst from the undergrowth. Her pretty silver pelt starkly contrasted with the blood-splattered ground, her tiny form dwarfed by that of the dogs she ran towards. Eyes wide Pigeonstep faltered in her shock, her paws frozen for a moment and unable to leap down as she had originally planned. She shook her head to clear it. Now’s not the time to freeze up! Just as she was about to join her clanmate below, Shackledstar’s tail lashed across her chest. It was a weak barrier that Pigeonstep could easily duck under, but a barrier nonetheless. She barred her teeth at him, ready to give him a piece of her mind for stopping her, but his command made her pause:

"Go back to camp, and get help. NOW. Get someone to fetch Lilydawn!"

He dropped down. There wasn’t any time to argue. The more she hesitated, the more likely it was that all three felines below would be ripped to shreds. She leapt from her perch into the bushes (concealed from the dogs who were probably focused on Shackledstar judging by the leader's hiss of pain), then dashed out in the direction of camp, uncaring of the leaves snagged in her fur. Get help, get help, get help, she chanted internally. It made her sick to her stomach to think of how Duckburr had been coated red, his body motionless and twisted somewhat strangely. It made her even sicker to think of Secretsong in the same position. What would she tell Hazepaw? Or Wolfstrike? Pigeonstep wasn't worried about Shackledstar; he had nine lives to protect him for Starclan's sake!

Her paws thrummed against the earth, adrenaline giving her the speed of a hundred cats as she sprinted home. There! Her gaze locked on her destination and she started yowling as soon as she came into earshot of camp. Get. Help. Get help!

The scenery before him would have been beautiful if it hadn't been for the terror coursing through his body as he pushed himself to keep moving. He cursed his large size, despite knowing most of his mass was made up of fluff, for it was a valid reason in his mind to be slower than most of his cats. Shackledstar was unable to get any further than a tail length from the brute that pursued him, and his mind reeled for a plan since he hadn't exactly gone into the flurry with an idea in mind other than to get the dogs away from his warriors. What are these mutts doing all the way in ShadowClan territory anyway? he thought crossly before he decided to do a rather stupid thing.

With a hiss of frustration, the massive gray leader spun on the spot, sliding a bit in the snow, to face the dog's ugly mug. Curling his lips over his teeth, he growled fiercely as the dog skidded to a stop in front of him, looking confused. Shackledstar took a paw step forward, and snarled, swiping his claws across the dogs muzzle. Satisfaction enveloped him when he made contact, and drew blood. It didn't last long, however, when the mutt shook its head, flinging mixed blood onto their surroundings, and lunged at him. The warrior leapt to the side, cursing his dumb bravery as he barely missed getting mauled like Duckburr. The tom then lunged for the dogs back leg, and consistently bit down a few times before streaking across the snowy surface again.

A muffled drawn yell sounded over the sounds of the ragged dog's breath as Shackledstar pounded over the forest floor, and relief finally sunk into the leader as he quickly recognized the odd voice of a two leg. With a quick check over his shoulder, the gray warrior was relieved to see that the dog was a little further behind now, favoring the back leg that he had bit.
