Viperstrike felt a chill in his bones as the cold leaf-bare winds buffeted his fur. The days were short, and the pale blue light that came after sunset would soon give way to night. He had been assigned to lead the evening patrol of the ShadowClan border. Leading patrols was a task he thoroughly enjoyed; it was a chance to use his leadership skills and ensure the well-being of RiverClan. What more could he ask for? However, even he couldn't deny the discomfort that came with patrolling the territory on a snowy evening. The first snow was a promise of hard moons to come, and Viperstrike knew he had to remain vigilant to serve RiverClan well.
He impatiently looked around for his clan mates. He was a little early, but Viperstrike believed that everyone should always be early. He was supposed to be patrolling with Thistlegaze, Northfur, Magpiepaw, and Featherpaw. Thistlegaze was a fine warrior, though Viperstrike had always been suspicious of the way he argued with his mother in his youth. Troubled familial relationships meant trouble for RiverClan, and trouble for RiverClan was the worst consequence of any action. Northfur was also a competent warrior, though Viperstrike wished she were less abrasive. Magpiepaw was his own apprentice. He would make a fine warrior one day, but Viperstrike knew the young cat needed to be toughened up first; nothing training with him couldn't fix. His lip involuntarily curled ever so slightly as he saw Featherpaw approaching him from across the clearing. Now there was a cat that couldn't be trusted. Her whole family had abandoned RiverClan; how long did RiverClan have till she followed suit? Still, perhaps she could make herself useful with enough training and reverence for the warrior code, though Viperstrike was still very skeptical. When had a half-clan cat ever helped RiverClan?
Viperstrike turned his head to look out over the territory. It would certainly be dark by the time they reached the ShadowClan border. He could only hope there wouldn't be any trouble. There hadn't been any major conflict with ShadowClan as of late, but Viperstrike had lived long enough to know there would always be a new dispute caused by some cat or other. It was important to always keep a lookout for threats to RiverClan.
