3 Moons Ago...
Sunnystep didn't want to be alone in the medicine den. All the changes in the last moon had taken their toll on her, and everywhere she looked reminded her of how different her life had become. A moon ago, she received her full name from Rosestream, moons of apprenticeship coming to fruition. Rosestream had told her that she would probably retire soon after Sunnystep became a full medicine cat. Sunnystep had noticed that her mentor was getting older, and it was getting harder for her to carry out her duties. She wanted Rosestream to have moons of peace and relaxation in the elder's den. However, it seemed like Rosestream might have known something about her future that Sunnystep didn't. Not long after Sunnystep's naming ceremony, Rosestream died.
Sunnystep had been devastated to find that her mentor had passed on one night. She also felt guilty that she hadn't know something was wrong. Rosestream hadn't seemed sick, just a little frail. Still, shouldn't a medicine cat be able to tell? Sunnystep could not shake the feeling that she had failed in some crucial way, in spite of knowing that she would never be able to save every cat. How would she manage without her mentor? Sure, she could always talk to her in StarClan, but that wasn't the same as having her just across the medicine den. And now she would be fully responsible for the health and wellbeing of WindClan. She loved her clan mates and wanted to do everything in her power to keep them well, but it seemed like no matter how hard she tried she would always miss something.
Nervously, she walked back to the herb stores, looking at her supply of catmint. She needed more, and it seemed like as good of reason as any to get out of her den. She stepped out into camp, and scanned to see who was around. She always felt better taking a warrior when she went to gather herbs. She spotted Ravenwing, and immediately walked over to her friend. "Hi, Ravenwing! How's the prey running?" Ravenwing had always been there for her, ever since she joined WindClan as a young kit. Perhaps talking to her friend would help her quiet her racing mind. Though, she knew that Ravenwing must be feeling extra pressure too. She had been named Clan deputy recently, and Sunnystep was super proud of her for it! But Sunnystep also knew that being deputy came with a lot of stress. Organizing warriors, making decisions with Flashstar... Sunnystep could never do a job like that. But if any cat could, it was Ravenwing.
Still, she wondered if her friend could use a break. Perhaps walking out into the leaf-fall air would do them both some good. "I was going to go look for catmint. Do you want to come with me? I could use some help carrying it back to camp."
