Sunnystep wished she could have gotten a few more hours of sleep. It was early in the morning, about the proper time to rise for the day. Sunnystep wanted to set a good example for Spottedpaw, so she had gone to her nest at a reasonable hour to wake up at a reasonable hour. It would have been perfect, if Sunnystep hadn't spent half the night worrying about greencough. Lately, every cough from a clanmate stirred anxiety in her. How many of her clanmates would get sick? How many of them would join StarClan? These thoughts had kept her up, leaving her exhausted. Yet she couldn't sleep till sunhigh when she had sick clanmates to take care of and an apprentice to train. She'd just have to do her best.
At least the cold air in the camp was waking her up, nipping at her fur to remind her that leafbare was cruel. She went to the fresh-kill pile to get something for Spottedpaw to eat. A young cat like her needed adequate nutrition. The growling in Sunnystep's own belly reminded her that she needed to eat too; she hadn't eaten since the last sunrise. She couldn't properly fulfill her duties if she went hungry for too long. Still... would there be enough for every cat to eat? The few pieces of prey leftover from the previous day were thin from leafbare too. Sunnystep settled on a scrawny rabbit. She could share it with Spottedpaw and let the young apprentice eat what she needed. Whatever was left would have to be enough to get her through the day.
"Good morning, Spottedpaw!" Sunnystep said, entering the medicine den. She tried to emulate positivity for her apprentice. It wouldn't be fair for such a young cat to be burdened by her worries. "I brought a rabbit for us to share while we get started on the day's training." Sunnystep wished that Spottedpaw could have begun her training during an easier season. It seemed too soon to start teaching her about treating greencough (though Sunnystep had only been a couple moons older than Spottedpaw when she had learned). Yet greencough was an imminent threat to WindClan, and any medicine cat needed to learn how to fight it eventually. Sunnystep just hoped that the harsh reality of the illness wouldn't scare Spottedpaw off from wanting to be a medicine cat. The outbreak last leafbare had almost made Sunnystep reconsider. Luckily, she had Rosestream to guide her through it. But Rosestream had been a medicine cat for many seasons, and Sunnystep couldn't hope to be as wise as her mentor. Still, she had to do her best for Spottedpaw.
Sunnystep's tone got more serious, losing its usual cheery timbre. "I'm going to start teaching you how to diagnose and treat greencough. Cinderspark has already fallen ill, so we need to be prepared."
